It's a well-known fact in the Shopper office that I vehemently dislike Apple's tactics when it comes to squeezing their customers for more money. Charging iPod Touch owners for firmware upgrades, for example, is a despicable practice when iPhone users get them free.
Now, eBay is at it again. I was clearing out a cupboard over the weekend and decided to sell a few things rather than throw them away. One item was an old foldable keyboard for a PDA, which I thought could fetch enough to be worth the hassle of listing. I set what I considered to be a fair price for postage and packing, only to see an error message telling me 'P&P cost for this category cannot be more than £0.00'.
I'd seen no warnings or messages to inform me that certain categories would be switched to free P&P, so it was a nasty surprise. Searching Google revealed hundreds of angry forum posts on the subject, plus eBay's official page detailing the change.
No fewer than 39 categories now have forced free P&P including clothes, shoes and accessories, video games, mobile and home phones, consumer electronics, computing and photography.
According to eBay, the change has been introduced since people now expect free P&P when shopping online in these categories, and it will benefit sellers because shopper's are more likely to buy your items than if you charged for postage.
This is surely a thinly veiled excuse for eBay wanting a bigger cut of the sale, since most sellers will have to find a way to increase the final sale price of their items in order to offset the loss of P&P. As one forum poster correctly observed "there's no such thing as free P&P – if you don't believe me, go ask the Post Office".
While frustrating for me, the switch is much more serious for businesses selling brand new items, especially heavy ones that cost a lot of money to post. Ebay already takes a big cut of the sale by charging a listing fee and a final value fee, which can combine to be more than 10 per cent. Any business that uses PayPal (a subsidiary of eBay) to receive payments gets a further chunk removed from the total, and I won't be surprised if many sellers decide this is the final straw and find somewhere else to sell products.
The biggest insult, though, is the way eBay tries to sweet talk sellers into continuing to sell in these categories. As well as final value fee "promotions from time to time" – whatever that means – "sellers should also bear in mind that the requirement to offer free postage & packaging applies only to the first domestic P&P option. Further chargeable shipping services can be offered in addition." I somehow doubt any buyer will opt to pay for delivery when they can get an item delivered for free. Plus, the onus is on sellers to ensure goods arrive safely with buyers, not the other way around, so there's no incentive for a buyer to pay extra for insurance when they can request a refund if the item doesn't arrive via an uninsured delivery method.

When you are charged £2.50 for delivery and the item arrives with a bit of cardboard around it in an ordinary envelope with a 2nd class stamp you will appreciate not being ripped off.
Or you could say, you knew what the total price was and were happy to pay it. Does it matter how the total was made.NO it doesn't.
Ebays days are numbered if they keep on like this. Its now over 10% in ebay fees + paypal fees as well as they insist you use it. Now you can't charge P&p. Whats next?
Oh I know Thanks for the huge profit and we are increasing our prices from..... isn't that where we came in lol.
John, I agree that some sellers do rip their customers off with postage fees, but let's also not forget two things:
1) Any seller that charges a buyer for 1st class postage and then sends it out 2nd class will surely get bad feedback, and this will also be shown on their feedback breakdown for postage costs.
2) It's a postage AND packing fee, so postage is only part of the cost. Jiffy bags cost money, as does a printed address sticker.
In fact, thirdly, as nob666 points out, the P&P price is a little irrelevant if a buyer is happy with the total price. P&P costs are a great way for sellers to offset the huge (and pretty unacceptable) Paypal and Final Value Fees.
Hopefully those sellers that package things poorly and don't use the postal methods they promised will have their reputations appropriately dented.
This means that everyone who used to do 99p listings (listings udner 99p are free) has now been told to increase the price of the listing to cover postage costs, however this clearly means the seller has to pay for the listings now.

i was trying to sell a heavy camera and it wouldnt let me charge postage so i mailed them and was informed certain catagories had to give free p&p, realy? well how come theres loads of items in the same catagory still chargeing p&p? i emailed them about that as well and was told i should notify them if i see it, why cant they just look themselves and they will see loads.
There's an easy way to get around this, completely legal which stems from ebay only making the first postage charge compulsory free.............. :D Collection anyone?......
Ebay is an online goldmine and the sellers are the guys with pick axes. If I wanted to waste a load of time running around selling stuff for someone else to profit then ebay would be perfect for that.
The problem with the first option must be free solution is that the reason (as stated by Ebay) that free P&P must be offered is to stop confusing the potential buyers.
But, if a buyer is not clever enough to work out the total price when both the item price and P&P price are stated next to each other, how is the same buyer going to know that he/she must select the required option at the checkout stage? Ebay won't even let the seller detail the costs in the item description - these listing are removed due to breach of policy!!
This is Ebay forcing sellers to misrepresent their items and will cause Ebay massive damage. Collectors of music will note that the number of listings have fallen from an average of 700,000 items for sale down to 200,000 in the last month!
This dangerous policy must be reversed if Ebay is to continue to attract buyers and sellers. At the moment, more sellers are leaving Ebay which reduces the choice for buyers, so buyers will give up meaning more sellers will give up until Ebay are smugly sitting in their expensive offices with nothing to do except go bankrupt and serve them right!
I have now removed all my vinyl listings, because of the trouble I get from saying :- "free p+p for collection only" shown in larger text than the item title/artist, leaving no doubts as to postage costs which are clearly shown. One buyer then accused me of deception 'claiming' I added p+p when the sale finished,BUT this was after !! I had asked ALL NEW BIDDERS if they were aware of P+P being for collection only.Ebay then sent an ALERT :- "Fee Circumvention is any manipulation of the eBay system to reduce the amount of listing fees you pay." I replied asking for details of "LISTING FEES" I was 'avoiding' ( NOTE !! 99.9 % OF all MY VINYL STARTED AT 99p & EXEMPT FROM SUCH FEES)...I was then sent:-this mssg.."We received a report that you attempted to avoid paying eBay fees or misused the reserve price feature to avoid paying reserve listing fees." MIRACLE the LISTING fees changed to RESERVE listing fees.AGAIN I asked what item /transaction was in question & they sent :- "I've reviewed your account and can confirm that the warning was for trying to avoid paying part of the Final Value Fee." & behold ANOTHER MIRACLE MY LISTING fees which had CHANGED TO..RESERVE listing fees, NOW they have changed to part of the Final Value Fee." WHAT NEXT A WHITE ******* RABBIT..
